Last year I did a few write-ups and drawings about some lady fighters from history who fought openly as their gender (there are plenty of disguised-as-a-man soldiers and plenty of trans soldiers, but those are outside the scope of this series).  This is by no means an exhaustive list; there were plenty of great figures that my schedule didn’t permit me to tackle (at least not yet).  But as Women’s History Month gets started tomorrow, I thought y’all might enjoy reading about some of history’s toughest broads.

Heralded by the success of Superman and Batman, the world of superheroes exploded in the late 1930s with a litany of colorful and often bizarre heroic characters, creating what is revered as The Golden Age of comic books. They defeated evil wherever it reared it’s ugly head, whether it be bloodthirsty Vampires from Pluto, repugnant Nazi jerks, or the mysterious and deadly effects of Atomic Radiation! These heroes sold books by the millions and ushered in an age of unprecedented JUSTICE. But soon, these ring a ding ding good times came to an end at the close of World War 2 as the heroes fell out of favor in the eyes of a giddy and spoiled public. It was curtains for the heroes, as the once successful publishers now faced bankruptcy and took to the giggle juice while their creations fell into the shadow realm of PUBLIC DOMAIN, a place where anyone, anywhere can use them for whatever nefarious deed their sick minds could concoct. GADZOOKS! No longer protected under the shield of copyright laws, these characters were buried and lost to the cruel hands of Father Time and the machismo of modern entertainment, as evil ran unencumbered through our streets!

BUT FEAR NOT, true believers! These heroes are back and better than ever! Reimagined by top creators in the industry, this anthology collects over 20 short stories paying homage and tribute to some of the greatest heroes and heroines lost to time with brand new, never-before-seen, exclusive tales bringing these amazing creations back to life! But don’t blow your wig, Johnny, this book is within your grasp! Get in on this here clambake and help show the world that these characters might have been buried under layers of dust, but they are NOT FORGOTTEN!

This anthology Kickstarter only has a few days to go, and is falling short of its goal. I desperately would like to see it funded, inasmuch as it’s exactly the type of book I was hoping to see assembled, after having written The League of Regrettable Superheroes. I believe in this project so much that I’m contributing to the reward tiers, you can get a LoRSH character sketch out of it! Woo Woo!

Please check out the Kickstarter for Not Forgotten, and get yourself a copy of some exciting, inventive superhero comics!

Artist Spotlight: Omar Morales

Omar Morales is the creator, writer, self-publisher, marketer and eternal sufferer of the original graphic novel CruZader™: Agent of the Vatican – funded on Kickstarter in 2013 and self-published in 2014. It was picked up by Diamond Comics Distributors and ComiXology on its first release, and it sold out in print in 2015. CruZader also holds the distinction as the Guinness World Records “Largest Comic Book Published,” awarded in 2014. More recently, Morales’ original short-story, Moon Girl, was accepted into the indie anthology “Not Forgotten,” and it will continue on in the pages of Alterna Comics later in 2017. You can find him on Twitter with the handle @TheCruZader.

What story are you working on for the book?

Moon Girl.

What public domain characters are you using and what’s the best thing about them?

Moon Girl, and her caretaker, Star. The best thing about them is their purity and optimistic outlook on humanity. They come from this outer space utopia - a subterranean moon society that is ancient and highly advanced, very different from Earth, and yet we can identify with their humanity in every way possible.

What was the first comic you remember reading that really hooked you into them?

I was honestly hooked into comics by re-runs of 1960s Marvel cartoons that would play at odd hours on obscure, non-English-Speaking TV channels. I would catch single-cell animations of Hulk, Iron-Man, Thor … and my favorite: Captain America and that mighty shield! Of course the 1967 Spider-Man re-runs got me into buying Spider-Man comics, coloring books, action figures that would shoot liquid webs, and all sorts of other Marvel merchandise. I was a dyed-in-the-wool Marvel kid for sure.

What attracted you to the Not Forgotten project?
I am convinced that there is a modern market for new stories told in the retro, golden-age style of comics. Nostalgia is big. Why not go back to the beginnings of when comics were created - a pop-culture phenomenon that still thrives today? When I heard the pitch for “Not Forgotten,” to use public domain heroes in an old-school anthology, I was sold! After all, it was this style of comics that inspired George Lucas and other legendary storytellers. I still remember how thrilled I was to type this phrase into my pitch to our editors: “a retro-futuristic adventure tale chock full o’ thought bubbles, ray guns and shiny, metallic clothing.” Pew! Pew!

Creator Spotlight: Ashley V. Robinson

Ashley Victoria Robinson is a Canadian actor/writer. She is the co-creator and star of The Red Shirt Diaries and can be seen on your TV in a couple different commercials. She hosts review shows for Jawiin (DCTV Recap, Game of Thrones Review Show), and Collider Video (biweekly on Collider Heroes!). Ashley is also the Head Editor at Top Cow where she wrote her first backup (Witchblade #175), and her first one-shot (Apollo IX #1), she contributed a page to the DC/IDW Love is Love Anthology. She has also had stories featured in: Alterna Comics’ IF Anthology vol 2, Colonial Comics vol 2 and has a couple other projects in the works she can’t responsibly talk about. Follow her on twitter @AshleyVRobinson

What story are you working on for the book? Terena of the Tundra

What public domain characters are you using and what’s the best thing about them? Terena of the Tundra is a take off on the classic character Terena of the Jungle. I wanted a fierce wild woman I could throw into the Canadian wilderness and could hold her own - Terena was the one! She is known for hunting down and killing evil men who threaten her and the animals she loves. Terena is kind of a feminist’s dream.

What was the first comic you remember reading that really hooked you into them? I read Tintin and Barbar comics in French when I was a little kid and those were probably my first. The ones that I remember actively seeking out first were Archie Comics. I loved every single character and they were so accessible at the grocery store! I still read the Mark Waid Archie Comics run monthly, so my tastes were clearly cemented very early.

What attracted you to the Not Forgotten project? The opportunity to play in a sandbox I didn’t have to create. Plus, I was looking for an excuse to work on something with Morgan and this seemed perfect!

A decade ago, Rica attended the Comic and Visual Storytelling program at the University of Gävle. She didn’t learn a whole lot, but she did learn that she loves making comics more than anything else in the world. That’s why she’s still doing it to this day. She’s had a couple of webcomics that are now gone and buried, and in the last few years she’s gone all out on anthologies.

Previous credits include work featured in Dirty Diamonds #6: Beauty and #7, Imagination, the Comfort Food Zine curated by Lauren Jordan and I Was a Teenage Gargoyle, an anthology on early fandom published by Sawdust Press. At the time of writing she’s working on the third chapter of her historical erotic comic Belle for Filthy Figments, as well as comics for Blocked, an anthology on online dating by Little Red Bird Media, and Beyond 2 by Beyond Press.

What story are you working on for the book?

I’m working on a story called The Price of Airmale! It’s sort of an origin story in a way, though more the origins of Airmale’s sidekick Stampy than our hero himself.

What public domain characters are you using and what’s the best thing about them?

I’m using the two main characters, Kenneth Stevens aka Airmale and his nephew (cousin in the original) Bobby who ends up as his spunky sidekick Stampy. I fell in love with them because it’s such a typical Batman and Robin dynamic, especially with the scientific nature of Airmale’s powers, but the characters themselves are so boring. There’s so much wasted potential there in postal puns alone, I felt like I had to write a story about them and update them to the 21st century.

What was the first comic you remember reading that really hooked you into them?

My first comics were Asterix and Tintin, so in that regard I think I’m typically European. As much as I loved those two it was comics like the Piranha Club by Bud Grace and anything Don Rosa has ever made that really got me hooked, because they really showed what could be done with the medium. I still try to draw inspiration from both Grace and Don Rosa in my own comics, whenever I can.

What attracted you to the Not Forgotten project?

The main draw was that I’d never written or drawn a superhero comic before and it seemed like a fun challenge I wanted to take on. I didn’t even really read superhero comics until a couple of years ago so it’s very much unfamiliar territory, but getting to know the Golden Age characters and deconstructing what superhero stories are actually about made me appreciate the whole genre a lot more!

Do you like superheroes? Keep an eye out for the Kickstarter for Not Forgotten, coming in February! I made a comic for it about a biology professor and his dorky nephew that I think you’ll enjoy!

Some time last year, Kyle Starks (robotmountain) and I had a bet, the stakes of which were that if I won, he would draw a Doom Patrol comic, and if I lost, I would write a story of his choosing.

Long story short, we both kind of won and lost, so the compromise is that I would write a Doom Patrol comic that he drew.

This is that comic. Please share it if you like it.

<3,

Benito
